Pink Buffalo Spores (Hairy Buffalo Spores)

Price range: $9.94 through $106.50

Pink Buffalo — also called Hairy Buffalo — is a Psilocybe cubensis strain collected from Koh Samui, Thailand, by ethnomycologist John Allen. Its name references a rare pink albino water buffalo near the collection site. The strain produces thick-walled, deeply pigmented spores with fine detail under magnification.

Description

A Thai Island Discovery

The Pink Buffalo strain was collected by John W. Allen on Koh Samui, a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, during one of his many field expeditions documenting psychoactive fungi in Southeast Asia. The unusual name derives not from the mushroom’s appearance but from a rare pink-skinned water buffalo Allen observed near the collection site — an albino animal considered auspicious by locals. The Psilocybe cubensis specimens were growing on buffalo dung in the island’s pastoral areas, where warm temperatures and monsoon rainfall create ideal fruiting conditions.

Spore Examination

Pink Buffalo spores are robustly built — subellipsoid, 12–15 × 8–10 micrometers, with walls that appear slightly thicker than the cubensis average under high magnification. Pigmentation is a deep, saturated purple-brown that produces strikingly dark prints. The spore surface is smooth, and the germ pore is well-developed and easy to locate. These characteristics combine to make Pink Buffalo spores visually distinctive on prepared slides, with strong contrast against standard mounting media. Researchers working on spore documentation photography often find this strain particularly rewarding.

Growth Characteristics

Fruiting bodies are medium to large with meaty caps that expand from hemispherical to broadly convex. Cap coloration is a warm reddish-brown at the center, transitioning to golden-tan at the margins. The surface sometimes displays fine fibrillose texturing — a detail possibly reflected in the alternate name “Hairy Buffalo.” Stipes are solid and whitish, bruising prominently. The strain colonizes vigorously in the 27–29°C range and fruits at 23–27°C. Its tropical island origin is evident in its preference for warm, humid conditions.

Significance for Researchers

Pink Buffalo joins Burma and Thai-Tanic as part of the Southeast Asian cubensis constellation. Comparing spore dimensions and cap morphology across these geographically proximate but ecologically distinct strains — mainland versus island, lowland rice paddies versus coastal pasture — reveals how microhabitat differences influence phenotypic expression. The strain’s documented collection history and named collector also give it a provenance advantage over many varieties of uncertain origin.
