Penis Envy Spores
$9.94 – $106.47Price range: $9.94 through $106.47
Penis Envy is a Psilocybe cubensis strain attributed to legendary ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, distinguished by a dramatically mutant morphology — thick, dense fruiting bodies with underdeveloped caps. Its unusual form and notoriously sparse spore production make it one of the most challenging strains to study and collect.
Description
A Legendary Mutation
The origin story of Penis Envy involves Terence McKenna, the ethnobotanist and author who reportedly collected large Psilocybe cubensis specimens in the Colombian Amazon during the early 1970s. According to mycological lore, spore prints from McKenna’s collection were later worked by Steven Pollock, a physician and mushroom researcher, who isolated a distinctive mutant phenotype through selective culture work. The result was a strain with radically altered morphology — heavy, club-shaped fruiting bodies with caps that fail to fully open — that bore little visual resemblance to typical cubensis. The provocative name stuck, and the strain became one of the most discussed varieties in amateur mycology.
Spore Collection Challenges
Penis Envy presents a unique challenge for spore collectors: because the cap rarely opens fully, spore dispersal is limited and spore prints are difficult to obtain. When collected, spores are subellipsoid, approximately 11–14 × 8–10 micrometers, with dark purplish-brown pigmentation consistent with Psilocybe cubensis. The germ pore is present and well-formed. However, print density is dramatically lower than heavy sporulators like Golden Teacher or Z-Strain — a single Penis Envy print may contain a fraction of the spore material found on a print from a more typical variety. This scarcity has contributed to the strain’s mystique among collectors.
Morphological Distinctiveness
No other commonly available cubensis strain looks quite like Penis Envy. Fruiting bodies are characterized by thick, bulbous stipes that account for most of the mushroom’s mass, topped by a small, often contorted cap that remains partially closed or wrinkled. Cap coloration is pale tan to golden. The flesh is extremely dense and bruises intensely blue-green. Several sub-varieties have emerged over the years, including Albino Penis Envy (APE) and Penis Envy Uncut, each with their own morphological quirks. Growth is slower than most cubensis strains, and fruiting temperatures of 23–26°C are standard.
Significance for Researchers
Penis Envy is a textbook example of how dramatic morphological mutation can occur within a species while spore morphology remains essentially unchanged. The spores are indistinguishable from standard cubensis under the microscope, yet the organism that produces them looks radically different. This disconnect between microscopic and macroscopic characters provides rich discussion material for taxonomy courses and illustrates the limitations of relying on any single morphological feature for identification.
Spores are sold exclusively for microscopy research, taxonomy, and educational purposes. Verify local laws before ordering.
