An Elusive Lineage

Unlike strains with well-documented origin stories, Oasis enters the mycological record without a detailed provenance narrative. It appeared in circulation among spore traders and researchers with the simple designation “Oasis” and no specific geographic attribution. This ambiguity is not unusual in amateur mycology — many strains have been passed between collectors for years with only a name attached. What matters to the researcher is that the isolate has proven genetically stable through repeated transfers, producing consistent morphological characteristics.

Spore Morphology

Oasis spores are subellipsoid, measuring approximately 11–14 × 7–9 micrometers, falling squarely within the expected range for Psilocybe cubensis. Wall pigmentation is a medium to dark purplish-brown. The surface is smooth under oil immersion, and the germ pore is present at the apical end. Spore prints from this variety are clean and well-defined, with even pigment distribution across the print surface. This consistency makes Oasis a reliable choice for researchers who need uniform slide preparations.

Growth and Morphology

Fruiting bodies of the Oasis strain are medium-sized and well-proportioned. Caps are convex to broadly convex, reaching 30–50 mm at maturity, with a warm golden-brown coloration that lightens at the edges. Stipes are moderately thick and white, displaying typical blue-green bruising. The annulus is present and membranous. Overall colonization speed is moderate, and the strain fruits well within the standard 23–26°C range. Substrate preferences are typical for cubensis — grain spawn, manure-based bulk substrates, and straw all support healthy development.

Every serious spore collection benefits from including less-common varieties alongside well-known standards. Oasis serves this role well — its reliable spore morphology provides a baseline for comparison, while its mysterious provenance makes it a subject for genetic fingerprinting studies that might one day reveal its geographic ancestry.
