Thai-Tanic (Thai Lipa Yai Cubensis) Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
Thai-Tanic (Thai Lipa Yai) is a Psilocybe cubensis strain from the Lipa Yai region of Thailand, documented by ethnomycologist John Allen during his Southeast Asian fieldwork. Named with a nod to the massive 1997 film, this Thai variety produces tall, vigorous fruiting bodies and dense spore deposits.
Description
Thailand’s Lipa Yai Region
Thai-Tanic traces to the Lipa Yai district in southern Thailand, where Psilocybe cubensis grows abundantly on water buffalo dung in the warm, monsoon-driven climate. The strain was documented by John W. Allen — the same ethnomycologist responsible for introducing Burma and Pink Buffalo to the Western research community. Allen reportedly named this variety “Thai-Tanic” as a play on words combining its Thai origin with a reference to the blockbuster film Titanic, which was released around the same time as his fieldwork in the late 1990s. The name has persisted, and the formal varietal designation Thai Lipa Yai accompanies it.
Microscopy Profile
Thai-Tanic spores are subellipsoid, measuring 12–15 × 8–10 micrometers, with robust walls and deep purple-brown to near-black pigmentation. Spore prints are satisfyingly dense — this strain deposits spores freely, yielding prints that can supply numerous slide preparations. Under high magnification, the germ pore is clearly delineated, and the spore wall shows a smooth, even surface without ornamentation. The intense pigmentation provides strong natural contrast on standard glass slides, reducing the need for staining in many microscopy applications.
Physical Description
Thai-Tanic produces tall, assertive fruiting bodies. Stipes can reach 200 mm or more in length, supporting medium to large convex caps that expand to broadly convex or plane at maturity. Cap color is golden-brown to tawny, sometimes with a reddish tinge at the center. The flesh is firm and bruises blue-green promptly. The partial veil leaves a well-defined annulus that catches heavy spore deposits, often appearing purple-dusted. Growth is vigorous — the Thai origin means this strain thrives at warm temperatures, with colonization optimal at 28–30°C and fruiting at 24–28°C on standard enriched substrates.
Southeast Asian Comparison
Adding Thai-Tanic to a collection already containing Burma, Pink Buffalo, Hanoi, and Malaysia completes a strong Southeast Asian cubensis panel. Researchers can compare morphological variation across mainland Thailand (Thai-Tanic), island Thailand (Pink Buffalo), Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam (Hanoi), and peninsular Malaysia — all drawn from the same broad tropical region but from distinct microhabitats. Such comparisons offer insight into how local ecology shapes strain characteristics within a widely distributed species.
These spores are provided for microscopy research, taxonomy, and educational use only. Always confirm local regulations before purchasing.
