Huautla Oaxaca Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
Named after the mountain town of Huautla de Jimenez in Oaxaca, Mexico — the very place where Maria Sabina conducted her famous veladas — this Psilocybe cubensis strain carries deep ethnomycological significance. Its fine spore morphology rewards careful examination under magnification.
Description
The Town Where Mycology Met Anthropology
Huautla de Jimenez sits high in the cloud forests of Oaxaca’s Sierra Mazateca at roughly 1,800 meters elevation. It was here that Mazatec curandera Maria Sabina introduced R. Gordon Wasson to the ceremonial use of psychoactive mushrooms in 1955 — an encounter that reshaped Western understanding of ethnobotany. While the wild species used in those ceremonies were primarily Psilocybe mexicana and related highland taxa, the cultivated Psilocybe cubensis strain bearing the Huautla name honors this pivotal location in mycological history.
Under the Microscope
Huautla spores are on the smaller side for cubensis — typically 11–13 × 7–8.5 micrometers, subellipsoid to ovoid, with relatively thin walls compared to bulkier strains. Print color is a medium purple-brown, somewhat lighter than varieties like Burma. This makes Huautla particularly interesting for side-by-side comparisons where researchers want to demonstrate intraspecific variation in spore pigmentation. The germ pore is present but subtle, requiring careful focus adjustment at higher magnifications to resolve clearly.
Morphological Description
Fruiting bodies are typically slender and elegant — tall stipes supporting modestly sized caps that rarely exceed 40 mm in diameter. Cap shape is conical to campanulate in youth, expanding to convex with a persistent pointed umbo. Coloration is a warm brown that fades to straw-yellow as specimens dry. The overall growth habit is measured and unhurried, with colonization and fruiting proceeding more slowly than aggressive strains like Burma or B+. Preferred fruiting temperatures fall in the 21–24°C range, reflecting its highland origin.
Research Context
Huautla holds a special place in any collection oriented toward the cultural history of mycology. Pairing it with Mazatapec and other Mexican-origin strains allows researchers to examine phenotypic diversity within a single geographic region. Its slower growth and more delicate morphology also illustrate how environmental pressures shape strain characteristics over time.
All spores are sold for microscopy, taxonomy, and educational purposes only. Verify legality in your jurisdiction before ordering.
