Mazatapec Spores

Price range: $9.94 through $106.50

Mazatapec is a Psilocybe cubensis strain with deep roots in the indigenous Mazatec tradition of Oaxaca, Mexico. Prized for its robust spore production and well-documented lineage, it provides excellent material for researchers studying ethnomycological history alongside spore taxonomy.

Description

A Strain Steeped in Mazatec Heritage

The Mazatapec strain takes its name from the Mazatec people of the mountainous Sierra Mazateca region in Oaxaca, Mexico. This area has a long, documented relationship with psychoactive fungi — most famously through the work of R. Gordon Wasson, who participated in a Mazatec mushroom ceremony in 1955. While Mazatapec itself is a cultivated Psilocybe cubensis isolate rather than one of the wild highland species used ceremonially, its name honors the cultural tradition that first brought Western attention to sacred mushroom use.

What You See Under the Microscope

Mazatapec produces generous spore deposits in deep purple-brown tones. Individual spores are subellipsoid, ranging from 11–14 × 7–9 micrometers, with smooth walls and visible germ pores under 400x magnification. The density of spore prints from this variety tends to be high, which means researchers can prepare numerous slides from a single print. Color intensity of the print is notably uniform — a quality that aids in photomicrography.

Morphological Notes

Mazatapec fruiting bodies develop at a measured pace compared to faster-colonizing strains. Caps are broadly convex, often retaining a gentle umbo, and transition from a warm cinnamon brown at the center to lighter tan or pale yellow at the margins. Stipes are relatively tall and slender, frequently reaching 150 mm or more, with a persistent annulus. Flesh bruises blue-green on handling. The species thrives in subtropical climates, with fruiting best observed at 22–25°C on manure-based or straw-supplemented substrates.

Place in the Research Collection

Mazatapec remains a cornerstone strain for researchers building a geographically diverse cubensis library. Its Mexican provenance pairs well with strains from Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa to illustrate the remarkable global distribution of Psilocybe cubensis. The strain’s moderate growth characteristics also make it a practical choice for educational demonstrations of fungal life cycles.
