Treasure Coast Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
Treasure Coast is a Psilocybe cubensis strain sourced from Florida’s Atlantic coast, where cattle pastures meet subtropical wetlands. It stands out for producing notably dense spore prints and occasional albino specimens — a trait that fascinates microscopy researchers.
Description
Florida’s Atlantic Shoreline
The Treasure Coast designation refers to the stretch of Florida’s eastern seaboard running roughly from Stuart to Sebastian — a region known for warm, humid weather and extensive cattle ranching. Psilocybe cubensis thrives in this environment, fruiting prolifically on bovine dung throughout the wet season from May through October. The Treasure Coast isolate was collected from this area and has maintained its characteristic vigor through years of culture transfers.
Spore Characteristics
What sets Treasure Coast apart under the microscope is the sheer density of its spore deposits. Prints are thick, deeply pigmented in dark purple-black, and can yield dozens of quality slides from a single collection. Individual spores measure 12–15 × 8–10 micrometers, subellipsoid, with smooth walls and a well-defined apical germ pore. Notably, this strain occasionally throws leucistic or albino variants — fruiting bodies with reduced melanin that produce lighter-colored spores. These lighter prints provide excellent contrast when mounted alongside standard dark-spored samples.
Physical Profile
Treasure Coast produces medium to large fruiting bodies. Caps begin conical, broadening to convex or plane with maturity, and display a rich caramel-brown center fading to pale golden edges. White universal veil remnants sometimes persist on the cap surface. Stipes are firm and whitish, bruising blue-green readily. The annulus is membranous and tends to collect a heavy coating of dropped spores, giving it a distinctive purple-dusted appearance. Growth is vigorous across a range of substrates, favoring temperatures of 24–27°C for fruiting.
Why Researchers Use Treasure Coast
The albino phenotype expression makes Treasure Coast a compelling subject for studying pigmentation genetics within Psilocybe cubensis. Even when working exclusively with spore morphology, the strain offers a natural teaching tool for discussing genetic variation and phenotype expression in fungi. Its generous sporulation also makes it a practical workhorse for anyone building a large reference slide collection.
