Hanoi Spores

Price range: $9.94 through $106.50

Hanoi is a Psilocybe cubensis strain collected in northern Vietnam, offering researchers a genetic perspective from a region distinct from the more commonly available Thai and Burmese varieties. Its compact growth form and reliable spore deposits serve comparative microscopy well.

Description

Northern Vietnam Origin

The Hanoi strain takes its name from the Vietnamese capital, situated in the northern part of the country where the Red River Delta provides fertile agricultural land. Northern Vietnam has a more pronounced seasonal climate than the south — warm, humid summers with cooler, drier winters — and Psilocybe cubensis fruits during the monsoon months when temperatures and moisture are both elevated. This seasonal pressure has likely shaped the strain’s characteristics differently than year-round tropical isolates from further south in Southeast Asia.

Microscopy Details

Hanoi spores are subellipsoid to ellipsoid, approximately 11–14 × 7–9 micrometers, with smooth walls and medium to dark purplish-brown pigmentation. Spore prints are of moderate density — sufficient for multiple slide preparations but not as overwhelmingly thick as heavy depositors like Z-Strain. Under oil immersion, the germ pore is visible at the apex, and wall thickness appears moderate. The spore profile is clean and well-defined, making it straightforward to photograph and measure during taxonomic documentation work.

Physical Form

Hanoi fruiting bodies tend toward a compact, sturdy build. Caps are convex to broadly convex, 25–45 mm across, with coloration in light to medium brown tones. The surface is smooth, occasionally with fine cracking at the center when conditions are drier. Stipes are proportionally short and firm compared to the elongated forms seen in equatorial strains, which may reflect the strain’s adaptation to a seasonal rather than perpetually tropical environment. Standard blue-green bruising is present. Colonization is moderate, with fruiting in the 23–27°C range on enriched substrates.

Why Include a Vietnamese Strain

The Southeast Asian cubensis cluster includes widely available strains from Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia — but northern Vietnamese isolates like Hanoi are far less common. Having a strain from this distinct climatic zone allows researchers to ask whether seasonal environmental pressures produce measurable differences in spore morphology or growth patterns. It fills a geographic gap in the collection that purely tropical Southeast Asian strains cannot address.
