StarGazer Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
StarGazer is a distinctive Psilocybe cubensis variety recognized by its unusual cap formation — fruiting bodies that tend to point upward rather than flattening at maturity. This uncommon growth habit paired with reliable dark spore prints makes it a conversation piece in any research collection.
Description
An Uncommon Growth Habit
StarGazer earned its name from a peculiar morphological trait: its fruiting bodies frequently maintain an upward-oriented cap posture rather than progressing through the typical convex-to-plane maturation sequence seen in most Psilocybe cubensis strains. The caps tend to remain somewhat conical or campanulate with margins that curve inward, giving the mushroom the appearance of gazing toward the sky. The precise origin of this isolate is not well documented, but it has been circulated in the mycological community since at least the mid-2000s.
Spore Observations
Under the microscope, StarGazer spores present a fairly standard cubensis profile — subellipsoid, 11–14 × 7–9 micrometers, with smooth walls and a visible germ pore. Print color falls in the typical dark purplish-brown range. What distinguishes this strain at the microscopic level is not the individual spore shape but rather the print pattern itself: because caps remain partially closed, spore deposits tend to concentrate differently on print media compared to flat-capped varieties, sometimes producing ring-shaped or irregularly distributed patterns that are interesting to document.
Physical Description
Beyond the signature upward cap orientation, StarGazer produces medium-sized fruiting bodies with moderately thick stipes. Cap coloration is golden-brown to tan, often with a darker central disc. The flesh is whitish and bruises blue-green typically. Stipes are white to cream-colored with a membranous annulus that may be somewhat irregular due to the cap’s reluctance to fully open. The strain colonizes at a moderate pace and fruits within standard cubensis parameters of 23–26°C.
Interest for Researchers
StarGazer is a natural talking point when discussing morphological variation and phenotypic plasticity within Psilocybe cubensis. How a single species can express such dramatically different growth forms — from the flat, broad caps of PES Amazonian to the upward-reaching form of StarGazer — illustrates the genetic diversity contained within cubensis. For educators building a teaching collection, this strain adds visual variety and invites discussion about the genetics of mushroom morphology.
All spores are intended for microscopy research, taxonomy, and education only. Check local regulations before ordering.
