PES Amazonian Spores

Price range: $9.94 through $106.50

PES Amazonian is a Psilocybe cubensis strain cataloged by Pacifica Exotica Spora, reportedly collected from the Amazon basin. It produces some of the largest fruiting bodies in the cubensis species, with correspondingly robust spore deposits for microscopy work.

Description

From the Amazon Rainforest

PES Amazonian was distributed by Pacifica Exotica Spora (PES), a now-defunct spore vendor that introduced several significant Psilocybe cubensis strains to the research community during the 1990s and early 2000s. The Amazonian isolate traces to collections made in the tropical lowlands of the Amazon basin — one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. In the warm, perpetually humid conditions of the Amazon, Psilocybe cubensis fruits year-round on cattle dung in cleared pastureland.

Microscopy Details

PES Amazonian spores are subellipsoid, measuring 12–16 × 8–11 micrometers — at the upper end of the size range for cubensis. They print in deep purple-brown to black, with heavy deposits that reflect the strain’s prolific sporulation. Under high magnification, the spore wall appears moderately thick with a smooth surface. The germ pore is clearly visible and slightly offset from center, which is characteristic of the genus. These large spores make excellent subjects for teaching basic microscopy techniques, as morphological features are easier to resolve even at lower magnifications.

Growth Morphology

This strain is known for producing tall, thick-stemmed fruiting bodies with broad caps that can exceed 70 mm in diameter under favorable conditions. Cap color is a rich chestnut brown centrally, lightening to golden at the margins. The flesh is dense and meaty, bruising intensely blue-green. Gills are tightly packed, transitioning from gray-white to dark brown-black as spores develop. PES Amazonian favors warm colonization temperatures around 28–30°C and fruits best at 24–27°C on manure-enriched substrates, consistent with its tropical origin.

Value to Researchers

Size matters in microscopy, and PES Amazonian delivers. The combination of large spores, dense prints, and vigorous growth makes this strain practical for high-volume slide preparation. Taxonomists studying tropical cubensis populations also appreciate having an Amazonian data point alongside Central American and African isolates for biogeographic comparison work.
