PF Classic Professor Fanaticus Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
PF Classic carries the legacy of Professor Fanaticus, the amateur mycologist who revolutionized home mushroom study in the 1990s with the PF Tek method. This Psilocybe cubensis strain produces dense, dark spore prints ideal for microscopy slide preparation and taxonomic comparison work.
Description
The Strain That Started a Movement
PF Classic traces its lineage directly to Robert McPherson, known in mycological circles as Professor Fanaticus. During the early 1990s, McPherson developed a simplified approach to mushroom cultivation using brown rice flour and vermiculite — a technique that opened the door for amateur mycologists worldwide. The Psilocybe cubensis isolate he worked with became known simply as PF Classic, and it remains one of the most historically significant strains in the hobby.
Microscopic Characteristics
Under magnification, PF Classic spores present as subellipsoid, typically measuring 11.5–17 × 8–11 micrometers. They display a rich dark purplish-brown coloration with a smooth, slightly thickened wall. Spore prints tend toward deep purple-black, making them excellent candidates for high-contrast microscopy slides. The basidia are four-spored, consistent with standard Psilocybe cubensis morphology.
Growth Morphology
Specimens from this lineage are characterized by medium-sized fruiting bodies with reddish cinnamon brown caps that flatten with maturity, often developing a slight umbo at center. Caps reach 25–50+ mm in diameter. Stipes are 150+ mm long, yellowish, and bruise bluish-green when damaged. The veil is deliquescent, often leaving remnants around the gills rather than forming a clean annulus. Colonization proceeds at a notably fast pace — this strain is recognized for rapid primordia formation.
Why Researchers Value PF Classic
As one of the oldest continuously maintained cubensis isolates, PF Classic serves as a reliable reference strain for comparative taxonomy. Its genetic stability after decades of transfers makes it a useful benchmark when examining newer or less-characterized varieties. Researchers studying spore morphology, germination rates, or pigmentation often include PF Classic as a control specimen. The strain thrives in subtropical conditions with fruiting temperatures of 23–26°C.
All spore syringes and prints are sold exclusively for microscopy research, taxonomy, and educational purposes. Check your local regulations before ordering.
